UGC directive on students’ transition to four-year undergraduate degrees

In order to facilitate their transfer to a four-year UG curriculum, the UGC has requested that universities provide bridge courses to students enrolled in UG programmes under the Choice Based Credit System. “Students who are enrolled in and actively pursuing a four-year undergraduate course under the CBCS are eligible to apply. Bridge courses may be offered by the universities to help students seamlessly transfer into the extended UG degree. To guarantee that current students may fully benefit from the four-year UG courses, this provision is crucial. Using their strong postgraduate courses and research infrastructure, more than 200 institutions have adopted the 4-year UG curricula with success. As a result, it is recommended that these universities encourage enrolled students to continue their education into the fourth year. Through correspondence with universities, the UGC has highlighted this provision and asked them to increase student awareness. Universities need to strive to put this student-beneficial policy into effect, according to UGC Chairperson Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar.

“UGC hereby reiterates the guidelines stated in the ‘Curriculum & Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes,'” declares a public notification.  According to the Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes, students who successfully finish a four-year degree course with 160 credits will be given a four-year UG Honours degree in their chosen major subject. Students who receive 75% or above in the first six semesters and who want to do undergraduate research can select a research stream in the fourth year of their four-year UG degree (Honours with Research). Students ought to work on a research project or dissertation with the assistance of a university or college faculty member.

The primary discipline will be the focus of the research project or dissertation. A UG Degree (Honours with Research) is granted to students who earn 160 credits, including 12 credits from a research project or dissertation.
