India Sets Green Ammonia and Methanol Standards to Boost Green Hydrogen Trade

The Government of India has announced standards for Green Ammonia and Green Methanol to boost the trade of Green Hydrogen derivatives under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has set emission thresholds for these green fuels, with Green Ammonia having a limit of 0.38 kg CO₂ equivalent per kg of ammonia, and Green Methanol having a limit of 0.44 kg CO₂ equivalent per kg of methanol. These standards will help decarbonise sectors like fertilisers, shipping, power, and heavy industry, positioning India as a reliable green fuel producer and exporter. The move is expected to boost growth in India’s green hydrogen sector by providing clarity to industry and investors.

India’s Green Methanol standard limits non-biogenic greenhouse gas emissions to 0.44 kg CO₂ equivalent per kg of methanol. CO₂ can be sourced from biogenic sources, Direct Air Capture, or industrial sources. Renewable energy for production includes stored or banked electricity from renewables. The Ministry may revise CO₂ source guidelines periodically.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) will issue separate guidelines for measurement, reporting, and certification of Green Ammonia and Green Methanol. Existing tenders and bids will follow previous terms, but can be aligned with the new standards if feasible. The notification provides clarity for industry and investors, supporting India’s green hydrogen sector and export ambitions for Green Ammonia and Green Methanol. It’ll help decarbonise key sectors and strengthen India’s position as a green fuel producer.
