Ghanaian PhD Students in UK Face Deportation Amid Scholarship Crisis

Over 100 Ghanaian PhD students in the UK are at risk of deportation due to unpaid tuition fees and living allowances, with some already deported or evicted. The students, enrolled at universities including University College London, Robert Gordon University, and the universities of Nottingham, Bradford, Warwick, Lincoln, and Liverpool, have appealed to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for help in resolving the issue with the Ghanaian government.

The Ghanaian government blames the crisis on £32 million in inherited debts and has begun auditing scholarships awarded by the previous administration. Registrar Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei claims payments have been made, but students report minimal support, with some owed up to 48 months’ stipends.

The situation is critical, with students facing rent arrears, relying on food banks, and struggling financially. Group president Prince Komla Bansah urges urgent action, stating many are in debt and reliant on loans from Ghana.
